LG Washer UE Error: Causes & Fixes
LG's own error-code list defines UE in four words: your laundry is unbalanced. It is not a fault code in the usual sense; the washer is reporting that it cannot spin the load safely until the weight is spread more evenly around the drum.
What LG washer UE means
Lower-case uE and upper-case UE mean different stages of the same problem, which is the single most useful thing to know about this code. LG documents that the washer refills, agitates to separate the items, drains and retries the spin; only after three failed attempts does uE become UE, meaning it has given up and needs you.
If the display is actually showing a different code, LG's own list separates them: OE means the water cannot drain, LE means the motor is overloaded and locked, and dE means the washer is unable to lock its door. A washer that will not spin can show any of these for quite different reasons.
Before you work on your washer
- Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
- The tub or drum can still be spinning: A washer tub spins at very high speed and coasts after the cycle stops. Wait until the tub has completely stopped and the lid or door lock has released before reaching inside; never force a locked lid or door open.
- Heavy appliance: get a second person: A washer is heavy and awkward, and it can tip when it is pulled out or tilted. Do not move, tilt, or lift it by yourself; have a second person help you.
What causes LG UE
- Laundry piled on one side of the drum: The everyday cause is simply that the wash ended up heaped on one side. LG describes the UE error as occurring when the laundry is piled up on one side of the drum despite the drum's own movements to spread it out. Difficulty 1/5.
- A single bulky or absorbent item (rug, pillow, comforter): One heavy item on its own is the classic trigger. LG names pillows and rugs, because the weight ends up concentrated in one area of the drum; Whirlpool gives the same advice from the other direction and says not to wash a single absorbent article such as one rug. Difficulty 1/5.
- Drum overloaded past about two thirds capacity: At the other extreme, an overfilled drum cannot redistribute anything. LG's target on a front loader is about two thirds of drum capacity so the laundry can move freely; Whirlpool's rule of thumb for a top loader is to add clothes loosely and no higher than the top row of holes in the basket. Difficulty 1/5.
- Load too small to distribute around the drum: A load that is too small is the cause people least expect. LG states that because of the drum size, small loads will not distribute evenly around the drum, which throws the spin out of balance just as surely as an overloaded one. Difficulty 1/5.
- Washer not level, or feet not in firm contact with the floor: If UE keeps coming back on ordinary loads, the machine itself is probably not sitting level. LG's instruction is to adjust the leveling legs with a wrench, raising the leg on the side the unit tilts toward, until the legs are in firm contact with the floor. Whirlpool requires all four feet in firm contact. Difficulty 3/5.
- UE persists after levelling and redistribution: the unit needs service: LG draws the line clearly: if UE or Ub comes back after the load has been redistributed and the machine has been levelled, the unit is not working properly and needs a repair visit rather than more load juggling. Difficulty 4/5.
Find the cause of UE on your washer
Step-by-step checks for LG UE
Check whether the display shows uE or UE
About 15 minutes
- Look closely at the case of the code: lower-case uE means the washer is still trying to rebalance by itself.
- Leave it alone through up to three automatic attempts; it refills, agitates to separate the load, drains and tries the spin again.
- If it settles on upper-case UE, it has given up and is waiting for you.
Look at what is actually in the drum
About 5 minutes
- Open the door and look at how the wash is sitting: heaped on one side is the usual picture.
- Note whether it is a single heavy item such as a rug, a pillow or a comforter.
- Note whether the drum is nearly empty, or packed past about two thirds full.

- On a top loader, open the lid and look at the plastic guard inside: if it shows more on one side than the other, the machine is leaning.
- Push down on opposite corners of the cabinet and see whether it rocks.
- Check that every foot is actually touching the floor.
How to fix LG UE
Add a few items to a small load
About 5 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Add a few similar items so the weight has something to balance against.
- Avoid washing one or two heavy items on their own in a large drum.
Do not wash one rug, pillow or comforter alone
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Wash bulky absorbent items with two or three similar pieces so the weight is shared.
- Spread the item around the drum rather than leaving it folded in one place.
- Use a lower spin speed where the cycle offers one.
Spread the wash out by hand and restart the spin
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Wait for the drum to stop completely before opening the door.
- Spread the laundry evenly around the drum in loose heaps rather than one packed mass.
- Close the door and run a spin cycle again.
Load the drum to about two thirds
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Take items out until the drum is about two thirds full so the laundry can move freely.
- On a top loader, keep the clothes loose and no higher than the top row of holes in the basket.
Level the washer on its legs
About 40 minutes · Difficulty 3/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Unplug the washer before moving it or working around its feet.
- With a wrench, raise the leg on the side the machine tilts toward.
- Adjust until the cabinet does not rock and every leg is in firm contact with the floor, sitting as close to the floor as practical.
- Run a spin cycle to confirm the error has gone.
