LG Washer IE Error: Causes & Fixes
On LG's error-code list IE means the water supply is inadequate. LG's fuller definition adds the part that decides when the code appears: the error occurs if the water fails to fill the tub to an adequate level in a specified period, so a slow fill that never reaches the level raises IE just as a dead supply does.
What LG washer IE means
IE and OE are opposite faults that both leave you standing at a machine that will not run: on LG's list IE means the water supply is inadequate, while OE means the water cannot drain. If the drum still holds water from the last cycle, the code to chase is OE, not IE.
Before you work on your washer
- Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Mains wiring, the power cord, or the outlet is involved: Work on the washer's mains wiring, power cord, outlet, or house circuit is not a do-it-yourself repair. Do not open the cabinet to test or replace wiring, the drain pump's electrical connections, or the lid switch circuit.
- Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
- Heavy appliance: get a second person: A washer is heavy and awkward, and it can tip when it is pulled out or tilted. Do not move, tilt, or lift it by yourself; have a second person help you.
- Water left in the tub can be scalding hot: A tub left full after a hot or sanitize cycle holds very hot water. Let it cool for about an hour, then drain the water out through the emergency drain hose into a flat container before you open the pump filter.
- Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses: Close both water faucets and drain the inlet hoses before you disconnect any hose or move the washer, or the hoses will still be under mains water pressure.
What causes LG IE
- Supply hose pressed, bent or kinked: A hose that is pressed or bent will raise IE even with the tap wide open, because a blocked hose restricts the flow. LG's fix is to unfold or spread the hose so water runs freely inside it, and on a top loader to straighten any kinks in the water lines. Difficulty 2/5.
- Inlet filter screen clogged with rust, sand or grit: The cause most owners never look at is the small mesh filter in the hose connection. LG states that when the water supply hose filter is clogged by foreign objects the water supply may be weak, and that clogged inlet filters slow the flow. Difficulty 2/5.
- Water shut off, tap closed, or the supply hose not connected: LG's first cause is the supply rather than the machine: water is cut off, the faucet is turned off, or the water supply hose is not connected. On a machine with separate hot and cold inlets, one closed tap is enough. Difficulty 1/5.
- Water inlet valve fault: IE persists with a full-pressure supply and clean filters: When the tap, the hose and the filter are all right and IE still appears, LG names the part: there may be a malfunction in the water supply valve, and the washer will require a repair service if the code reappears. Difficulty 4/5.
- Supply hose or water line frozen in cold weather: In cold weather the water may simply be frozen on its way in: LG lists a supply hose frozen by cold weather as a cause of IE, and names the safe way to thaw it, in warm water of 50 degrees Celsius or lower, once the hose has been disconnected. Difficulty 2/5.
- Drain hose pushed more than 4 inches into the drainpipe: On a top loader LG adds a check that has nothing to do with the inlet: how far the drain hose goes into the standpipe. LG has you confirm the drain hose is not installed deeper than 4 inches (10 cm) into the drainpipe, so an IE that survives every inlet check can still be an installation fault. Difficulty 1/5.
Find the cause of IE on your washer
Step-by-step checks for LG IE
Check how far the drain hose goes into the standpipe (top loaders)
About 10 minutes
- Look at where the drain hose enters the standpipe or drainpipe.
- Measure how far the end of the hose sits inside it.
- LG's limit is 4 inches (10 cm): pull the hose back if it is deeper than that and secure it so it cannot slip down again.
Check both taps are fully open and both hoses are connected
About 10 minutes
- Find the taps behind the washer; a machine with hot and cold inlets needs both open, and one closed tap alone will raise IE.
- If a tap is closed, turn it anti-clockwise to open it fully, not just part way.
- Check each supply hose is still screwed to its tap and to the machine.
- Check the water is on elsewhere in the house, in case the supply itself is off.
Take the hose off and look at the inlet filter screen
About 25 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Shut both taps, then unplug the washer before you undo anything wet.
- Unscrew the supply hose from the back of the machine over a towel and a shallow container.
- Look into the inlet connection for the mesh filter and pull it out with your fingers or pincers.
- Hold it to the light: rust, sand and grit block it from the supply side, so it looks brown or silted rather than linty.
- Clean it with a toothbrush under running water, refit it, and screw the hose back on.
Follow the supply hose end to end for kinks or ice
About 20 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Pull the washer out far enough to see the whole run of each supply hose.
- Look for the hose bent, pressed flat, or trapped behind the machine, and straighten every kink.
- In freezing weather, check whether the hose or the water line is frozen: nothing will come through until it thaws.
- To thaw, shut the tap, disconnect the hose and warm it in water of 50 degrees Celsius or lower.
How to fix LG IE
Open both taps fully and reconnect the supply hose
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Turn each tap anti-clockwise until it is fully open.
- Screw any loose supply hose back onto its tap and onto the machine, and check it is not dripping.
- Restart the cycle and watch that water enters within the first minute.
- Worth doing first: LG charges for a service visit when the IE turns out to be the water being shut off.
Pull the drain hose back out of the standpipe
About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Unplug the washer.
- Pull the drain hose up until no more than 4 inches (10 cm) of it sits inside the drainpipe.
- Secure it at that height so it cannot slide back down.
- Run a cycle and check the tub both fills and drains.
Clean the inlet filter screen in the hose connection
About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Shut both taps and unplug the washer.
- Unscrew the supply hose at the machine over a towel; a little water will come out of the hose.
- Pull the mesh filter out with fingers or pincers and clear the rust, sand and grit out of it with a toothbrush under running water.
- Refit the filter the way it came out, screw the hose back on hand tight plus a quarter turn, and open the taps.
- Check the connection for drips, then run a cycle to confirm the fill.
Straighten the supply hose and leave it room behind the machine
About 20 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Unplug the washer before moving it.
- Straighten every bend and free the hose from wherever it is pressed.
- Push the machine back leaving enough clearance that the hose is not crushed against the wall.
- Run a cycle and confirm the tub fills.
Thaw a frozen supply hose
About 60 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Shut the tap, unplug the washer and disconnect the hose at both ends.
- Warm the disconnected hose in water of 50 degrees Celsius or lower; do not use boiling water or an open flame.
- Check the tap and the house supply line too, as the ice is often upstream of the hose.
- Reconnect, open the tap, and run a cycle once water flows freely.
- Insulate or reroute the line so it does not freeze again.
