LG Washer DE Error: Causes & Fixes
dE is a door-lock report, not a wash fault. LG's error-code list states that dE means the washer is unable to lock its door, and LG's front-load article puts it as the washer door was unable to lock. The machine has decided it cannot prove the door is latched, so it refuses to run.
What LG washer dE means
dE1 separates the two halves of the problem: LG states that dE1 means the washer's door is open and not locked, or in its front-load wording that the door is not closed properly. LG also warns that the same code can read dE1, del or dEL depending on the display, which is why people search for a code they think they misread.
dE2 is the more serious half: the door is shut but the lock never engages. LG's error-code list states that dE2 means the washer door is closed, but not locking, and its front-load list repeats that the door is closed but not locked. Note that LG's older front-load article prints the word drawer here instead of door, which is a wording slip on a front-load page rather than a different fault.
Two further members of the family belong to LG's drawer units rather than to a front-load door. LG states that dE3 appears if the lid is not properly latched, and its mini-washer article defines dE3 as the inside door (cover) not being closed and dE4 as the drawer being closed while the lock does not operate normally. On those machines the part that must latch is a drawer and its lid.
Before you work on your washer
- Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Mains wiring, the power cord, or the outlet is involved: Work on the washer's mains wiring, power cord, outlet, or house circuit is not a do-it-yourself repair. Do not open the cabinet to test or replace wiring, the drain pump's electrical connections, or the lid switch circuit.
- Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
- The tub or drum can still be spinning: A washer tub spins at very high speed and coasts after the cycle stops. Wait until the tub has completely stopped and the lid or door lock has released before reaching inside; never force a locked lid or door open.
- Water left in the tub can be scalding hot: A tub left full after a hot or sanitize cycle holds very hot water. Let it cool for about an hour, then drain the water out through the emergency drain hose into a flat container before you open the pump filter.
What causes LG dE
- A sleeve or corner of fabric is pinched between the door and the rubber gasket: The commonest cause is a sleeve or a corner of fabric pinched in the rubber seal, where it is easy to miss. LG states the code can be caused if laundry is caught between the washing machine door and the rubber door gasket, and asks owners to check that small items are not caught between the door and the gasket. Difficulty 1/5.
- The door was not pushed shut hard enough for the latch to catch: dE1 separates the two halves of the problem: LG states that dE1 means the washer's door is open and not locked, or in its front-load wording that the door is not closed properly. LG also warns that the same code can read dE1, del or dEL depending on the display, which is why people search for a code they think they misread. Difficulty 1/5.
- Too much laundry, or a bulky item such as a blanket, is pressing on the door: A full drum is the second cause, and a single bulky item is worse than a heavy load. LG states there can be too much laundry for the door to close properly, that a large load pushing on the door should be pushed deeper into the machine before closing it, and that bulky laundry such as blankets can stop the door closing completely. Difficulty 1/5.
- The door latch or its strike is bent or broken: When the door shuts but nothing locks, LG points at the latch itself. LG lists a bent or broken door latch among the causes of dE2, and states plainly that the door will not close properly if the door latch is bent. A latch that has been knocked out of line is the mechanical version of this fault and it will not improve with resets. Difficulty 4/5.
- A one-off lock fault that LG's power-off reset clears: LG's reset is not an ordinary power cycle and the order trips people up: power the washer off, unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker, and then, with the power still disabled, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds. Only after that do you restore power and try again. LG calls dE a problem that can normally be resolved by performing a simple reset. Difficulty 1/5.
- The door lock sensor is faulty, or the lid magnet is missing: There are two invisible causes that no amount of reloading will fix, and LG names both: the dE error code may also occur if the door magnet is missing, or if the door lock sensor is malfunctioning. LG also lists a damaged door or door locking mechanism. These are the cases where the door looks and feels perfectly normal and dE keeps returning. Difficulty 4/5.
- The rubber door gasket is torn, damaged, or has fallen out of place: A damaged door seal is the one cause LG explicitly tells owners not to touch. LG lists a damaged or torn rubber gasket as a cause of dE, and states that the door gasket is a key component in sealing the drum, so do not attempt to fix it yourself; request service for a thorough inspection instead. A badly resealed gasket leaks water onto the floor and into the cabinet. Difficulty 4/5.
- On a pedestal or mini washer, the drawer is not pushed all the way in: On an LG pedestal or mini washer the equivalent fault is a drawer that has not gone all the way home. LG states that dE1 there means the drawer is not closed properly, or is displayed when the drawer is not closed completely, and its fix is to close the drawer by pushing it to the end and then press the Start button. Difficulty 1/5.
- On a new pedestal washer, the protective film is still on the lid: There is one cause that only bites on a brand-new pedestal washer, and it is easy to miss: LG asks owners seeing dE3 to verify that the film on the lid was removed, warning that if it is not removed the plastic film may roll up and not allow the door to close. LG also asks for a check for clothing and other obstructions preventing the lid from closing. Difficulty 1/5.
Find the cause of dE on your washer
Step-by-step checks for LG dE
Check the door opening and the rubber gasket for trapped laundry or damage
About 10 minutes
- Open the door and run a hand right round the rubber gasket, looking for a sleeve, a corner of fabric, a sock or a small item pinched in the fold.
- Pull anything you find back into the drum; LG's point is that small items caught between the door and the gasket are enough to raise the code.
- Look at the gasket itself for tears, splits, or a section that has come out of its channel or fallen away from the front panel.
- Check whether the drum is packed, or whether one bulky item such as a blanket is leaning on the door.
- Do not try to reseat or patch a damaged gasket: LG's instruction is to have it inspected instead.
On a pedestal or mini washer, check the drawer travel and the lid
About 10 minutes
- Pull the drawer fully open, then push it back in to the end of its travel and press Start.
- Look for a foreign object caught between the drawer and the main body, which LG names as a cause of dE4, and take it out.
- On a recently installed unit, check whether the protective plastic film is still on the lid; LG warns it can roll up and stop the lid closing.
- Check for clothing or anything else stopping the lid from closing, then close the lid firmly and restart the cycle.
Read exactly which dE code the display is showing
About 3 minutes
- Look at the display and write the code down character by character: dE, dE1, dE2, dE3, dE4, or on newer front loaders E01 or E30.
- If the code looks like del or dEL, treat it as dE1; LG says the same error can render that way.
- dE and dE1 (E01) mean the door is open or not closed properly, so the closure is what to check.
- dE2 (E30) means the door is closed but the lock never engaged, which points at the latch, the lock sensor or an obstruction.
- dE3 and dE4 belong to LG's pedestal and mini washer drawers, not to a front-load door.
- If the display reads dL instead, that is LG's separate door latch switch code.
Run LG's power-off reset with the START/PAUSE hold
About 10 minutes
- Press POWER to switch the washer off.
- Unplug it from the outlet, or switch off its circuit breaker.
- With the power still disabled, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds. This is the step people skip, and the reset does not work without it.
- Plug the washer back in, or switch the breaker back on.
- Power it on and start a cycle, then see whether the dE code comes back.
Open the door and close it again the way LG specifies
About 5 minutes
- Push all the laundry fully inside the drum; with a large load or a blanket, push it deeper rather than taking it out first.
- Pull the door open using the handle, so the latch resets.
- Close it again firmly, pressing the centre of the door handle from the front rather than nudging the edge.
- Watch the display: LG says the code clears and the washer resumes operation once the door is properly closed.
- If it clears and then returns mid-cycle, note whether it returns at the same point each time.
On a top loader, check the small magnet at the front of the lid
About 10 minutes
- Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker.
- Open the lid and look along its front edge, just below the front part of the lid, for a small magnet in a plastic housing.
- Check whether the magnet is still seated, or whether there is an empty recess where it used to sit.
- A missing magnet means the washer cannot tell that the lid is shut, which is the top-load version of this fault.
- Do not remove trim, unclip the lid switch, or test its wiring; report a missing magnet to a technician along with the code.
Look at the latch and the hole it goes into, without opening the cabinet
About 10 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before you put your hands near the lock.
- With the door open, look at the plastic or metal tongue on the door and at the slot in the front panel it engages.
- Check whether the tongue is bent, cracked, chipped, or sitting at an angle: LG states the door will not close properly if the door latch is bent.
- Close the door slowly by hand and watch whether the tongue enters the slot squarely or catches on its edge.
- Stop there. Do not open the cabinet, unclip the lock, or put a meter on its wiring; the lock is a mains-voltage switch.
How to fix LG dE
Free the laundry trapped in the door seal and reload
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Open the door and pull out whatever is pinched in the gasket fold, working right round the seal.
- Load so that sleeves, drawstrings and corners of sheets sit inside the drum rather than draped over the lip.
- Close the door by pressing the centre of the handle and start the cycle again.
- If the same spot traps laundry every wash, look at the gasket for a section that has come out of its channel.
Re-close the door by pressing the centre of the handle
About 5 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Pull the door open using the handle rather than prising it at the edge.
- Press the centre of the door handle from the front to close it, firmly enough to feel the latch seat.
- Watch the display clear; LG says the washer resumes operation once the door is properly closed.
- If the code returns on the next load, close it the same way each time and check the gasket before assuming a fault.
Push the drawer to the end of its travel and press Start
About 5 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Open the drawer, check for a foreign object caught between the drawer and the main body, and remove it.
- Push the drawer in to the end of its travel.
- Press the Start button to resume.
- If the code still shows, LG's guidance for the drawer units is that it should be checked by a professional service technician.
Get the door open when dE has left water in the drum
About 20 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Do not force the door: LG keeps it locked while there is water in the drum, and while the drum is spinning or still hot.
- Press Cancel to stop the operation.
- Select Spin Only to drain the water out of the tub.
- Wait for the click of the lock releasing at the end of the spin, then take the laundry out.
- If the drum was hot from a high-temperature cycle, let it cool; LG says the door opens once the drum has cooled down.
Push the load in deeper, or split a bulky item out
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Push the laundry deeply into the drum so nothing is leaning on the door; LG's instruction is to push it in further rather than to close the door harder.
- With a blanket, duvet or rug, feed it in a section at a time and keep it clear of the gasket.
- If the drum is so full that the load springs back against the door, take some of it out and wash it in two loads.
- Close the door by pressing the centre of the handle and restart.
Peel the protective film off a new pedestal washer lid
About 5 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Check the lid of the pedestal washer for the clear protective film fitted at the factory.
- Peel it off completely, including any strip that has rolled up along an edge.
- Clear any clothing or other obstruction from the lid opening.
- Close the lid firmly and restart the cycle.
Reset the washer with the power off and START/PAUSE held
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Power the washer off, then unplug it or switch off its circuit breaker.
- With the power disabled, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds.
- Restore power, switch the washer on and start a cycle.
- If dE comes back after the reset, stop resetting it: LG's guidance at that point is that service is required.
