LG Washer OE Error: Causes & Fixes

LG's error-code list defines OE in five words: the water cannot drain. LG's fuller name for it is the Water Outlet Error, shown when water is not leaving the drum.

Before you work on your washer

  • Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
  • Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
  • Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
  • Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
  • Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
  • Mains wiring, the power cord, or the outlet is involved: Work on the washer's mains wiring, power cord, outlet, or house circuit is not a do-it-yourself repair. Do not open the cabinet to test or replace wiring, the drain pump's electrical connections, or the lid switch circuit.
  • Water on or near the power cord, outlet, or wiring: Water from the tub, the pump filter, or a hose has reached the washer's power cord, its outlet, or wiring inside the machine. Do not touch the washer, its cord, or standing water around it.
  • Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
  • The tub or drum can still be spinning: A washer tub spins at very high speed and coasts after the cycle stops. Wait until the tub has completely stopped and the lid or door lock has released before reaching inside; never force a locked lid or door open.
  • Heavy appliance: get a second person: A washer is heavy and awkward, and it can tip when it is pulled out or tilted. Do not move, tilt, or lift it by yourself; have a second person help you.
  • Water left in the tub can be scalding hot: A tub left full after a hot or sanitize cycle holds very hot water. Let it cool for about an hour, then drain the water out through the emergency drain hose into a flat container before you open the pump filter.
  • Hard and sharp objects collect in the pump filter: The drain pump filter and coin trap collect loose change, buttons, pins, and other hard items from pockets. Pull debris out carefully and wear gloves; anything broken or pointed in there can cut you.

What causes LG OE

  1. Drain hose kinked, crushed, or pinched behind the washer: LG's first listed cause is the drain hose: kinked or compressed, so the water has nowhere to go. The fix LG gives is simply to straighten it so water can flow freely. Difficulty 2/5.
  2. Drain pump filter clogged (front load and combo units): The other main cause is the drain pump filter. LG ties it directly to this code: the filter collects lost buttons, loose change and lint, and LG asks owners to check it whenever the drain is slow or an OE error appears. Difficulty 2/5.
  3. Drain pump or control fault: OE persists after the hose and filter are clear: If the hose is clear, the filter is clean, and the machine still will not drain, LG treats it as a service matter rather than a further DIY step: contact LG Customer Service for a service visit, or on a top loader, the unit will require a repair service if the error returns. Difficulty 4/5.
  4. Frozen drain hose: In cold weather the cause can be outside the machine altogether. LG lists a frozen drain hose as a cause of OE and states plainly that if the drain hose is frozen, water will not drain from the drum. Difficulty 2/5.

Before anything else: has water from the drum or a hose reached the power cord, the outlet or the wiring, or do you smell burning?

Step-by-step checks for LG OE

Retest with a Spin Only cycle

About 15 minutes

  1. Plug the washer back in and close the door or lid.
  2. On an LG top loader, press POWER, then press the SPECIAL USE key until SPIN ONLY is lit, and press START/PAUSE.
  3. Watch whether the water level drops and whether OE returns.

Check the drain pump filter (front load and combo units)

About 30 minutes

  1. First work out whether your machine has one: LG fits the drain pump filter to front load washers and combo units, not to top loaders.
  2. Switch the washer off and unplug it, and make sure the drum is empty.
  3. Open the service cover at the bottom of the machine and put a shallow container underneath.
  4. Pull out the residual water drain hose and remove its cap to let the standing water out before you unscrew anything.
  5. Take the filter out and clear the lint, coins and buttons caught in it.

Pull the washer out and check the drain hose end to end

About 25 minutes

  1. Unplug the washer, then pull it far enough from the wall to see the whole drain hose.
  2. Look for the hose pinched between the back of the machine and the wall, which is where LG says it is most often crushed.
  3. Straighten every kink and free anything compressing the hose so water can flow freely.
  4. In cold weather, check whether the hose or the drain line is frozen: a frozen hose stops the drum draining at all.

How to fix LG OE

Drain the residual water, then clean the drain pump filter

About 35 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Switch the washer off and unplug it.
  2. Open the service cover at the bottom and place a container underneath.
  3. Pull out the residual water drain hose, remove the cap and let the water out before unscrewing the filter.
  4. Unscrew the filter, clear the lint and debris, rinse it and refit it firmly.
  5. Reseat the cap and the cover, then run a drain or Spin Only cycle.
  6. Check the filter periodically from now on, especially when the drain slows.

Straighten the drain hose and give it room behind the machine

About 25 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Unplug the washer before moving it.
  2. Straighten every kink and free the hose from wherever it is being crushed.
  3. Push the washer back leaving enough clearance that the hose is not pinched against the wall.
  4. Run a Spin Only or drain cycle to confirm the water goes.

Thaw a frozen drain hose

About 60 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Warm the drain hose and the drain line gradually, working from the outside in; do not use an open flame.
  3. Once it runs clear, keep the hose out of unheated spaces or insulate the run so it does not refreeze.
  4. Run a drain cycle to confirm.
