LG Washer LE Error: Causes & Fixes
LG's error-code list gives LE in six words: the motor is overloaded and locked. In LG's fuller description the code is displayed when the tub fails to spin, so it is a motor that cannot turn rather than a motor that will not start.
What LG washer LE means
LG's name for the code on its top load machines is the Motor Locker Error, and LG ties it to one specific picture: the motor cannot spin because a coin or a foreign object has been caught in the mechanism.
LE is easy to mistake for the unbalance code, and the two have different fixes. On LG's own list LE is the motor overloaded and locked, while UE means the laundry is unbalanced. Redistributing the wash answers UE; a drum that cannot turn at all is LE.
Before you work on your washer
- Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Mains wiring, the power cord, or the outlet is involved: Work on the washer's mains wiring, power cord, outlet, or house circuit is not a do-it-yourself repair. Do not open the cabinet to test or replace wiring, the drain pump's electrical connections, or the lid switch circuit.
- Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
- The tub or drum can still be spinning: A washer tub spins at very high speed and coasts after the cycle stops. Wait until the tub has completely stopped and the lid or door lock has released before reaching inside; never force a locked lid or door open.
- Hard and sharp objects collect in the pump filter: The drain pump filter and coin trap collect loose change, buttons, pins, and other hard items from pockets. Pull debris out carefully and wear gloves; anything broken or pointed in there can cut you.
What causes LG LE
- Coin or other foreign object jammed where the drum turns: LG's name for the code on its top load machines is the Motor Locker Error, and LG ties it to one specific picture: the motor cannot spin because a coin or a foreign object has been caught in the mechanism. Difficulty 2/5.
- Drum overloaded, or a heavy item washed on the wrong cycle: The first cause LG names is the load itself: the motor cannot operate properly because the washing machine has been overloaded. On this code the drum is too heavy to turn, which is not the same complaint as a load that is merely sitting to one side. Difficulty 1/5.
- Rotor position sensor, stator or motor fault: LE returns with an empty, free-turning drum: If LE keeps coming back after the load and the drum have been checked, LG stops the DIY route there: unplug the power cord and contact the LG service centre, because at that point the machine needs a technician's diagnosis rather than another reset. Difficulty 4/5.
- Temporary error that clears after a five minute power reset: LG treats LE as possibly temporary and gives a reset with a specific wait: unplug the power cord, wait five minutes, then try the cycle again. Five minutes matters; a quick pull and plug back in is not the test LG describes. Difficulty 1/5.
Find the cause of LE on your washer
Step-by-step checks for LG LE
Look at what is in the drum before anything else
About 10 minutes
- Open the machine and judge how full the drum is and how heavy the load is when wet.
- Note whether it is one large item such as a blanket, a rug or a duvet.
- Take part of the load out; LG's fix for a heavy load is to reduce it and to use the bedding cycle for blankets and large items.
Reset the washer on the power cord and rerun the cycle
About 10 minutes
- Unplug the power cord.
- Wait five minutes, which is the wait LG gives; a quick unplug and replug is not the same test.
- Plug the washer back in and run the cycle again with the drum loaded normally.
- Watch whether LE comes back at the point the drum starts to turn.
Turn the empty drum by hand and listen
About 10 minutes
- With the washer still unplugged and the drum empty, turn the drum slowly by hand a full revolution.
- Listen for abnormal noise and feel for the drum stopping suddenly or catching at one point.
- A drum that turns smoothly and quietly is not being held by anything mechanical.
Cut the power and search the drum for a coin or other hard object
About 20 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Turn the washer off and unplug it, then take all the laundry out.
- Feel around the drum and, on a top loader, around the washboard for coins, clips, wire or bra underwires.
- Work round the drum in sections with a torch; small metal objects sit in the gaps rather than in the open.
- Lift anything you find out with pliers or tweezers, not with bare fingers.
How to fix LG LE
Clear a one-off LE with a five minute power reset
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Unplug the power cord and leave it unplugged for five minutes.
- Plug the machine back in and run the cycle again.
- If the cycle completes, the error was temporary; if LE returns, treat it as a real fault and carry on with the checks.
Take washing out, and put bedding on the bedding cycle
About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Take enough out that the drum is no more than about two thirds full.
- For a blanket, duvet or other large item, select the bedding cycle rather than a normal wash.
- Restart the cycle and check the drum turns from the first wash action.
Remove the coin or object jamming the drum
About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your washer before you start.
- Turn the power off and unplug the washer before putting a hand in the drum.
- Empty the laundry out so you can see the whole drum.
- Remove the object with pliers or tweezers; LG names those tools rather than fingers because the edges are often sharp.
- Turn the drum by hand afterwards to confirm nothing else is caught.
- Plug the washer back in and run a short cycle to confirm LE has gone.
