GE Washer Not Draining: Causes & Fixes
On the GE Profile UltraFast Combo washer/dryer, an '18' fault code (and the related 'Check and Clean Drain Pump Filter' message) means the pump filter needs cleaning; GE ties this same fault to very wet loads at the end of a wash cycle or longer than usual dry times.
About a GE washer not draining
On 2015-and-newer GE top load washers, a flashing RINSE light or 'Po' scrolling across the display usually means the washer took too long to pump the water out, pointing back to a drain restriction rather than an unrelated new fault.
Before you work on your washer
- Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Mains wiring, the power cord, or the outlet is involved: Work on the washer's mains wiring, power cord, outlet, or house circuit is not a do-it-yourself repair. Do not open the cabinet to test or replace wiring, the drain pump's electrical connections, or the lid switch circuit.
- Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
- The tub or drum can still be spinning: A washer tub spins at very high speed and coasts after the cycle stops. Wait until the tub has completely stopped and the lid or door lock has released before reaching inside; never force a locked lid or door open.
- Heavy appliance: get a second person: A washer is heavy and awkward, and it can tip when it is pulled out or tilted. Do not move, tilt, or lift it by yourself; have a second person help you.
- Water left in the tub can be scalding hot: A tub left full after a hot or sanitize cycle holds very hot water. Let it cool for about an hour, then drain the water out through the emergency drain hose into a flat container before you open the pump filter.
- Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses: Close both water faucets and drain the inlet hoses before you disconnect any hose or move the washer, or the hoses will still be under mains water pressure.
- Hard and sharp objects collect in the pump filter: The drain pump filter and coin trap collect loose change, buttons, pins, and other hard items from pockets. Pull debris out carefully and wear gloves; anything broken or pointed in there can cut you.
Why your GE washer is not draining
- Normal GE cycle pause, or dial manually advanced past the pump-out step: GE says pauses of up to three minutes between steps of a wash cycle are normal on many models, so a washer sitting idle for a few minutes mid-cycle has not necessarily failed to drain. Difficulty 1/5.
- Pump filter clogged (where the model has one): On the GE Profile UltraFast Combo washer/dryer, an '18' fault code (and the related 'Check and Clean Drain Pump Filter' message) means the pump filter needs cleaning; GE ties this same fault to very wet loads at the end of a wash cycle or longer than usual dry times. Difficulty 2/5.
- Drain hose or standpipe height outside GE's discharge-height spec: GE sets different minimum discharge heights by washer type: at least 30 inches above the floor for top load washers and at least 24 inches for full-size front load washers, both capped at a maximum of 8 feet. Difficulty 2/5.
- Unbalanced load stops a GE front loader from draining or spinning: For a GE front load washer that will not drain or spin, GE's own fix for an unbalanced load is to make sure the wash load is not out of balance by redistributing the clothing or increasing the load size. Difficulty 1/5.
- Drain pump failed or jammed: GE's escalation for a top load washer that fills but 'only hums' instead of draining is a paid service visit through GE's Bodewell service network, not further owner troubleshooting. Difficulty 4/5.
- Balance ring sloshing sound mistaken for standing water: A 'sloshing water' sound with no water visible in the wash basket is usually the washer's balance ring, a sealed plastic ring partially filled with a saltwater brine solution, and GE describes it as a normal sound rather than a sign of standing water or a drain fault. Difficulty 1/5.
- Lid not fully closed (1994-and-earlier GE top load models): On GE top-load washers from 1994 or earlier, spin and drain happen at the same time, and GE states the lid must be down for the machine to operate, so a lid that is not fully closed on one of these older models stops the pump-out. Difficulty 1/5.
Find the cause for your washer
Step-by-step checks for a GE washer not draining
Confirm it's not just a normal GE pause or a skipped pump-out
About 5 minutes
- Time how long the washer has been idle; GE says pauses of up to 3 minutes between cycle steps are normal.
- If your washer has a manual dial timer, check whether the dial was advanced by hand while paused after agitation.
- If neither applies and the cycle has clearly stalled, move on to the next check.
Check the display for a GE fault or status code
About 5 minutes
- Note whether your model shows an '18' fault or 'Check and Clean Drain Pump Filter' message (GE Profile UltraFast Combo) or a flashing RINSE light / 'Po' message (2015+ top load).
- Remember GE top load washers display codes differently across model generations, and front load codes vary less, so match what you see to your own model's manual where possible.
- If no code or status message is shown, or your model has no display, move on.
Check whether the load is unbalanced (front load)
About 10 minutes
- Open the door and look at how the wash load sits in the drum.
- GE's own fix is to redistribute the clothing or increase the load size if it is out of balance.
- Restart the cycle and watch whether it now drains and spins normally.
Tell a normal balance-ring sound from real standing water (top load)
About 5 minutes
- Open the lid (or pause the cycle) and look directly into the wash basket for visible water.
- If you hear a 'sloshing water' sound but see no water in the basket, GE says that is the balance ring, which is normal.
- If water is actually visible above the basket bottom, treat it as a real drain problem and continue.
Close the lid firmly (1994-and-earlier top load models)
About 5 minutes
- Check your GE or Hotpoint washer's age or model plate; this only applies to units from 1994 or earlier.
- Firmly close the lid, since GE says the lid must be down for spin and drain to run.
- Restart the cycle and watch whether the washer now drains.
Find and check the pump filter, if this model has one
About 30 minutes
- On a front load washer, open the front-bottom access panel if present; GE says most front load models have one, but some require service instead.
- On a top load washer, check the model year: 2001-and-newer standard models have no accessible filter, while Spacemaker models from 2014 on have a removable lint filter in the basket.
- On the GE Profile UltraFast Combo, follow the Owner's Manual or GE's support article to clean the pump filter and clear the '18' fault.
Check the drain hose, and run GE's 2015+ Po-code procedure if it applies
About 20 minutes
- Switch the washer off at the outlet or breaker and ease it away from the wall with a second person.
- Follow the drain hose end to end and straighten any kink or crushed section.
- If the display flashed RINSE or scrolled 'Po', press Start or select Drain & Spin, then disconnect and remove the hose to check its full length for an internal clog.
- Reconnect the hose and resume the cycle.
Measure discharge height and standpipe diameter against GE's spec
About 10 minutes
- Measure the top of the standpipe from the floor: at least 30 in for a top load washer, at least 24 in for a full-size front load washer, and no more than 8 ft either way.
- Confirm the standpipe or wall drain is at least 1-1/2 in inside diameter and open to the air, not sealed or taped shut.
- On a top load washer with a low drain, confirm the Drain Hose Clip (anti-siphon clip) from the install kit is fitted; front load washers do not use this clip.
How to fix a GE washer not draining
Close the lid firmly on 1994-and-earlier GE top load washers
About 5 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Firmly close the lid so it sits fully down; GE says spin and drain run together and need the lid down.
- Restart the cycle and confirm the washer now drains.
No action needed: the balance ring sloshing sound is normal
About 1 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- If there is no water visible in the basket and the sound matches a sloshing balance ring, GE says this is normal and the washer does not need repair.
- Continue running the cycle as usual.
Redistribute the load or increase its size on a GE front load washer
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Open the door and redistribute the clothing evenly around the drum.
- If the load is very small, add a few more items so it is not out of balance, per GE's own guidance.
- Restart the cycle.
Let the pause finish, then stop advancing a manual dial by hand
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Give the washer a few minutes; GE calls pauses up to 3 minutes normal.
- On manual dial models, do not turn the dial by hand during a pause after agitation.
- If the cycle still will not resume, restart it or select Drain & Spin.
Clean the pump filter where your GE model has one
About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
- Unplug the washer before opening any access panel.
- On a front load washer with a front-bottom access panel, open it, drain residual water, and clean the filter per the Owner's Manual.
- On the GE Profile UltraFast Combo, clean the pump filter per the Owner's Manual or GE's dedicated support article and confirm the drain hose is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
- On a 2001-and-newer standard top load washer there is no accessible filter to clean; skip to the professional pump resolution if this is the suspected cause.
Bring the standpipe height and hose fit within GE's spec
About 20 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
- Adjust the standpipe or hose so the discharge height meets GE's minimum: 30 in for top load, 24 in for front load, and never more than 8 ft.
- Confirm the standpipe is at least 1-1/2 in inside diameter and open to the atmosphere.
- On a top load washer with a low drain, fit the Drain Hose Clip (anti-siphon clip) from the install kit; do not use it on a front load washer.
Straighten or clear the drain hose
About 25 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
- Straighten every kink and free the hose from anything crushing it.
- If a Po code or RINSE flash appeared, disconnect the hose fully and check its whole length for a clog before reconnecting.
