GE Dishwasher PrS Error: Causes & Fixes
On a GE dishwasher, the PrS code means the pressure (water level) sensor is sending an invalid signal to the control, which prevents the cycle from starting or causes it to cancel. GE says this is most likely a wiring harness or sensor issue and recommends service.
What GE dishwasher PrS means
PrS differs from other GE dishwasher codes that look similar: H2O means a low-water situation (not a sensor fault), and GE says to schedule service only if H2O appears during a 1-Hour Wash cycle; LEAK DETECTED means GE's leak-detection system canceled the cycle; PF means a power failure interrupted the dishwasher and GE says to simply restart the cycle; and a number-plus-H code like 1H just means the dishwasher is in Delay Start mode, not an error.
Before you work on your dishwasher
- Power: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the dishwasher cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Disconnect power before accessing internal dishwasher parts: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off the circuit breaker that powers it before removing panels, the filter, or the drain pump cover, or before reaching into the sump.
- Heavy appliance: two-person lift: A dishwasher is heavy and can tip. Do not pull it out of the cabinet, tilt it, or lift it by yourself; get a second person to help.
- Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses: Turn off the water supply before disconnecting the drain hose, siphon connection, or water inlet, or before pulling the dishwasher out for service.
What causes GE PrS
- Wiring harness or pressure sensor fault (undifferentiated): GE attributes PrS most likely to a wiring harness connection issue at the pressure sensor, alongside the sensor itself; GE does not describe a way to distinguish the two without service diagnostics and recommends a technician. Difficulty 1/5.
- Pressure sensor clogged with buildup or electrically failed: The pressure sensor itself can fail electrically or become clogged with buildup, causing false readings that stop the dishwasher; this is documented in detail by iFixit's GE-specific pressure sensor replacement guide. Difficulty 3/5.
- Debris blocking the filter or sump (GE's documented water-level check; not confirmed by GE as a PrS-specific cause): Although GE does not name it as a cause of the PrS code specifically, sump or filter blockage is a documented cause of water-level problems on GE dishwashers. GE's drain troubleshooting guidance instructs owners to remove and check the Fine and Ultra Fine filters in the bottom of the dishwasher and make sure no paper or large object is blocking the sump area, which is a safe step to try before assuming the pressure sensor itself has failed. Difficulty 1/5.

Step-by-step checks for GE PrS
Check the Fine and Ultra Fine filters and sump area for blockage
About 10 minutes
- Open the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack.
- On models with a Fine and Ultra Fine filter, remove the filters from the bottom of the dishwasher and look for buildup or debris.
- Check the sump area in the rear of the tub and clear out any paper or large object blocking it.
Inspect the pressure sensor for debris
About 45 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your dishwasher before you start.
- Disconnect power at the wall switch or breaker and confirm the controls do not turn on.
- Turn off the water supply valve.
- Remove the dish racks and the kick plate.
- Loosen the mounting screws and pull the dishwasher out slightly.
- Place a bowl under the pressure sensor, then release the retaining latch and pull the sensor out.
- Use a flashlight to look inside the sensor for gunk or debris.
How to fix GE PrS
Clean the Fine and Ultra Fine filters and clear the sump
About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Remove the bottom rack.
- On models with an Ultra Fine Filter, twist it counterclockwise and lift it out.
- Rinse the Ultra Fine Filter with warm soapy water; avoid scouring pads or brushes, which can damage it.
- Twist the two retaining posts counterclockwise and remove the Fine Filter, then rinse it with warm soapy water the same way.
- Clear any paper or large object blocking the sump area in the rear of the tub.
- Reinstall the filters in the reverse order and twist the retaining posts clockwise to lock them into place.
- Run a cycle and see whether the PrS code returns.
Replace the pressure sensor
About 60 minutes · Difficulty 3/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your dishwasher before you start.
- Disconnect power at the wall switch or breaker and confirm the controls do not turn on.
- Turn off the water supply valve.
- Remove the dish racks and kick plate.
- Loosen the mounting screws, shorten the adjustable legs, and pull the dishwasher out slightly.
- Place a bowl under the sensor, release the retaining latch, and pull the old sensor out.
- Install the new WD21X25468 sensor in the same orientation and press it fully into place.
- Push the dishwasher back into the cabinet and reinstall the mounting screws.
- Reinstall the kick plate before restoring power.
- Turn the water supply valve back on, restore power, and run a cycle. Watch from the front only; do not reach under the running unit. If water reaches wiring, switch off the breaker and stop.
