GE Dishwasher H2O Error: Causes & Fixes
On a GE dishwasher, the H2O (also shown as H20) code means the dishwasher is not getting enough water, or any water at all, during the timed water-fill phase of the cycle.
Before you work on your dishwasher
- Power: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the dishwasher cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Disconnect power before accessing internal dishwasher parts: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off the circuit breaker that powers it before removing panels, the filter, or the drain pump cover, or before reaching into the sump.
- Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses: Turn off the water supply before disconnecting the drain hose, siphon connection, or water inlet, or before pulling the dishwasher out for service.
What causes GE H2O
- Water supply valve not fully turned on / low pressure: GE states the most likely cause of H2O is that the water supply to the dishwasher has not been turned completely on, commonly on a first-ever run, right after house plumbing work, or when the under-sink supply line was recently shut off. Difficulty 1/5.
- Inlet water hose kinked (non-1-Hour-Wash cycles): When H2O appears during AutoSense, Heavy, Normal, or Light cycles (not the 1-Hour Wash), GE's fault-code guidance points to a kinked inlet water hose as the likely cause. Difficulty 1/5.
- Dishwasher not level: An unlevel dishwasher can make water pool toward the front or back of the tub, giving the control the impression that water level is low in some areas and triggering H2O. Difficulty 2/5.
- Inlet valve screen clogged or valve electrically defective: A water inlet valve with a clogged inlet screen or an internal electrical defect can also restrict fill flow enough to prevent a dishwasher from getting enough water in the fill window; this is documented for dishwashers generally, not specifically for GE. Difficulty 3/5.
- 1-Hour Wash cycle fill-timing sensitivity: GE treats H2O differently when it appears only during the 1-Hour Wash cycle: rather than listing a DIY cause, GE directs owners straight to scheduling service, implying that cycle's shorter fill window is a known sensitivity point for this code. Difficulty 1/5.
- Underlying fault needs professional diagnosis: When the basic consumer checks (water supply, valve position, leveling) are all confirmed correct and H2O still occurs, GE's own guidance moves straight to a service call, implying an underlying fault beyond what a homeowner can diagnose without tools. Difficulty 1/5.
Find the cause of H2O on your dishwasher
Step-by-step checks for GE H2O
Check that the dishwasher is level
About 10 minutes
- Use a level to check front-to-back and side-to-side.
Check that the water supply valve is fully open
About 5 minutes
- Locate the hot water shutoff valve under the sink nearest the dishwasher.
- Confirm it is turned completely on.
Identify which cycle triggers H2O
About 5 minutes
- Note whether H2O appears only during the 1-Hour Wash cycle.
- Note whether H2O also appears during AutoSense, Heavy, Normal, or Light cycles.
Inspect the inlet hose for kinks
About 5 minutes
- Trace the accessible run of the dishwasher's inlet water hose.
- Check for kinks, crushed sections, or sharp bends.
Test inlet valve coil resistance and inspect the screen
About 30 minutes
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your dishwasher before you start.
- Disconnect power at the plug or breaker and confirm the controls do not turn on.
- Turn off the water supply and remove the bottom access panel.
- Do not open the junction box.
- Remove the wire leads from the inlet valve solenoid coil.
- Set an ohmmeter to R x 1000 and measure resistance across the coil terminals (expect roughly 700-900 ohms).
- Inspect and clean the inlet screen of any debris.
How to fix GE H2O
Fully open the water supply valve
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Locate the hot water shutoff valve under the sink nearest the dishwasher.
- Turn the valve fully on.
- Reselect the desired cycle to clear the code.
Straighten the kinked inlet hose
About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5
- Trace the accessible run of the inlet water hose.
- Straighten or reroute it so it has no kinks or sharp bends.
Level the dishwasher
About 20 minutes · Difficulty 2/5
- Check front-to-back and side-to-side level with a level.
- Adjust the leveling legs until the appliance is level.
Clean the inlet valve screen or replace the inlet valve
About 45 minutes · Difficulty 3/5
Warning: injury is possible here. Take the precautions in Before you work on your dishwasher before you start.
- Disconnect power and turn off the water supply.
- Remove the bottom access panel. Do not open the junction box.
- Place a towel under the inlet valve to catch water that drains from it.
- Remove the wire leads from the solenoid coil.
- Clean debris from the inlet screen and reinstall it.
- If coil resistance was out of spec, disconnect the water supply line and fill hose, unscrew the valve from the chassis, and install a replacement valve in reverse order.
- Restore water with power still off and check for leaks. Reinstall the bottom access panel, then restore power.
