Samsung Washer SUD Error: Causes & Fixes

SUD is Samsung's excessive-suds code. Samsung's US error-code table groups SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS and 5Ud5 together as the same fault shown by different display generations, and its Philippines support table lists the same code as 'Foaming Detected', caused by too much foaming.

What Samsung washer SUD means

A code that looks similar but means something else sits right next to SUD in Samsung's own table: SDC or 5DC means the detergent drawer itself is not fully closed, which is a mechanical fit issue rather than an over-sudsing condition, and it clears with a click once the drawer seats properly.

Before you work on your washer

  • Power: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
  • Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
  • Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the washer cool first.
  • Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
  • Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
  • Disconnect power before opening the washer: Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before removing the pump filter or access panel, before pulling the machine out, and before touching any wiring.
  • Water left in the tub can be scalding hot: A tub left full after a hot or sanitize cycle holds very hot water. Let it cool for about an hour, then drain the water out through the emergency drain hose into a flat container before you open the pump filter.
  • Never mix bleach with another cleaner in the washer: Clearing an odour usually means running a cycle with chlorine bleach or a washer cleaner. Run one product at a time and rinse between them. Bleach plus ammonia, a toilet or drain cleaner, or an acid such as vinegar releases toxic gas in a small, closed laundry room.
  • Hard and sharp objects collect in the pump filter: The drain pump filter and coin trap collect loose change, buttons, pins, and other hard items from pockets. Pull debris out carefully and wear gloves; anything broken or pointed in there can cut you.

What causes Samsung SUD

  1. Normal suds-reduction pause: not a fault: Samsung treats SUD as informational rather than a fault. Its US page states plainly that the code does not mean service is needed, and its Philippines table classifies the same code as one of the washer's normal operations, run to prevent a non-sensing fault rather than to report a broken part. Difficulty 1/5.
  2. Too much detergent for the load, or over the MAX line: Samsung names the cause directly, and it sits on the detergent side, not the machine: too much detergent, or the wrong type of detergent, both trigger SUD. Difficulty 1/5. Part cost no parts needed.
  3. Non-HE or high-sudsing detergent used: Samsung's fix for the detergent itself is specific: use HE (High Efficiency) detergent, which is built for HE front loaders and produces far less foam than a regular detergent run through the same machine. Difficulty 1/5. Part cost HE detergent: low (estimate).
  4. Detergent residue (soap scum) built up in the tub over time: Detergent that never used to cause a problem can start to, once residue has been building up quietly for months. Samsung states that overusing detergent causes soap-scum buildup in the outer tub that eventually causes odors, and that same residue is a source of the suds SUD is designed to catch on later washes even at a normal dose. Difficulty 1/5. Part cost bleach (optional): low (estimate).
  5. Drum overloaded past three-quarters full, so detergent can't rinse out: A packed drum keeps detergent from rinsing out with the rest of the load. Samsung's own cleaning guidance is to fill the washer no more than three-quarters full, and warns that an overfull washer can leave clothes unevenly washed or rinsed because detergent cannot reach every item, which is exactly the kind of leftover suds SUD is built to catch. Difficulty 1/5.
  6. Debris/pump filter restricting drain flow (not Samsung's documented cause for SUD, but worth ruling out): Samsung's own documentation keeps SUD in its own row, separate from the drain-error group. The Philippines error-code table lists a restricted drain pump or a clogged debris and mesh filter as causes of the 5E/E2/5C drain error and the NF no-fill error, not of Sud; Samsung does not document a clogged debris filter as a documented cause of the suds code itself. Difficulty 2/5. Part cost no parts needed.
  7. SUD keeps returning after detergent, load size, residue and filter have all been checked: Samsung's own closing instruction for any information code, including Sud, is the same one to fall back on if none of the detergent, load-size or maintenance checks clear it: contact Samsung Support rather than keep guessing. Difficulty 1/5.

Find the cause of SUD on your washer

Before anything else: is there water leaking onto the floor or towards the cord and outlet, do you smell burning, or has the circuit breaker for the washer tripped more than once?

Step-by-step checks for Samsung SUD

Check the detergent type and the dose actually used

About 10 minutes

  1. Check the bottle or box for an HE (High Efficiency) label; a regular, non-HE detergent produces far more foam in this washer.
  2. Check the amount used against the detergent's own label, not a habitual capful: concentrations vary between 1x, 2x and 3x formulas.
  3. Check that the drawer was not filled past the MAX line.
  4. If HE detergent was used at a measured dose within the MAX line, the detergent itself is unlikely to be the cause.

Check how full the drum was

About 5 minutes

  1. Think back to how full the drum was: Samsung's own guidance is no more than three-quarters full.
  2. An overfull load stops detergent reaching every item, so it never rinses out evenly, which can be read by the washer as too much suds.

Check for detergent residue and when Self Clean last ran

About 5 minutes

  1. Check for a musty smell or visible scum around the door seal or in the detergent drawer, which Samsung ties to overused detergent building up in the outer tub.
  2. Think about how long it has been since Self Clean, Pure Cycle or Self Clean+ last ran: Samsung's own interval is about once a month or every 30 to 40 loads.
  3. If a Self Clean reminder has been showing and ignored for a while, residue is a reasonable suspect even with a correct day-to-day dose.

Let the automatic suds-reduction pause run its course

About 15 minutes

  1. Leave the washer alone: Samsung's washer pauses on its own to let the suds dissipate, then continues the cycle automatically.
  2. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart the cycle; that does not speed up the pause and can leave the load half-washed.
  3. It is normal for the code to flash briefly again at the very end of the cycle as a reminder, even after the wash has actually finished.

Read the exact code on the display

About 2 minutes

  1. Look at the display and note the exact letters: SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS or 5Ud5 are all the same excessive-suds code across different display generations.
  2. SDC or 5DC is a different code: it means the detergent drawer is not fully closed, not that there are too many suds.
  3. Anything else on the display is outside this code and should be looked up separately.

Check the debris/pump filter and how the washer is draining

About 25 minutes

  1. Let the water in the washer cool for about an hour if a hot cycle such as Pure Cycle or Sanitize ran recently.
  2. Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening the filter access panel.
  3. Open the pump filter over a shallow pan and a towel; check whether it is clogged with lint, coins or debris, and note whether draining seemed slow or noisy on the last few loads.
  4. Handle any debris carefully: broken or sharp items collect in this filter.

How to fix Samsung SUD

Measure detergent to the label, and stay under the MAX line

About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Measure to the detergent's own label rather than a habitual capful; concentrations vary between 1x, 2x and 3x formulas.
  2. Never fill the drawer past the MAX line; Samsung warns this can damage or stain clothes and can cause leaks or other damage to the washer.
  3. Re-run the load and watch whether the code returns.

Wash smaller loads so detergent can rinse out

About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Fill the drum no more than three-quarters full, Samsung's own guideline.
  2. Split an oversized load into two smaller ones rather than packing it in.
  3. Re-run and confirm the load rinses fully with the code gone.

Run Self Clean (Pure Cycle) to clear built-up residue

About 240 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Make sure the washer is empty.
  2. Select Self Clean, Pure Cycle or Self Clean+ from the control panel; no detergent is needed.
  3. Add bleach only if there is an existing mold smell, and never combine it with any other cleaning product in the same load.
  4. Expect about one hour on a top load washer or about four hours on a front load washer.
  5. Put it on a repeating schedule: about once a month, or every 30 to 40 loads.

Switch to HE detergent and use less of it

About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Replace a regular, non-HE detergent with one labeled HE (High Efficiency); it is built for low sudsing in this kind of washer.
  2. Use noticeably less than a top-load habit suggests: Samsung describes HE detergent as very concentrated.
  3. Run a load and confirm the code does not return.

Leave the washer to finish the suds-reduction pause

About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Do nothing: the washer pauses on its own to let suds dissipate, then continues automatically.
  2. Expect the code to possibly flash again at the very end of the cycle; that is a reminder, not a new problem.
  3. Only move on to the checks below if SUD keeps returning on later washes.

Clean the drain pump debris filter

About 25 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Let standing water cool for about an hour first if a hot cycle ran recently.
  2. Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker before opening the filter access panel.
  3. Open the pump filter over a shallow pan and towels, and clear out lint, coins or debris.
  4. Handle debris with care: broken or sharp items collect in this filter.
  5. Reinstall the filter fully, restore power, and check draining on the next load.
  6. This is general maintenance rather than a documented SUD fix; Samsung's own SUD entry does not list a clogged filter as a cause.
