Frigidaire Dishwasher Not Draining: Causes & Fixes

Frigidaire puts its glass trap and filter first when a Frigidaire dishwasher will not drain: food and debris collect there and block the drain path, and on models that report it the control raises i40, which Frigidaire defines as a clogged filter or sump caused by food soils building up.

Before you work on your dishwasher

  • Power: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
  • Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
  • Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the dishwasher cool first.
  • Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
  • Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
  • Water on or near electrical parts: Water is on or near the dishwasher's wiring, power cord, outlet, or control board. Do not touch the dishwasher, its cord, or standing water around it.
  • Disconnect power before accessing internal dishwasher parts: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off the circuit breaker that powers it before removing panels, the filter, or the drain pump cover, or before reaching into the sump.
  • Heavy appliance: two-person lift: A dishwasher is heavy and can tip. Do not pull it out of the cabinet, tilt it, or lift it by yourself; get a second person to help.
  • Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses: Turn off the water supply before disconnecting the drain hose, siphon connection, or water inlet, or before pulling the dishwasher out for service.
  • Hot water and steam scald risk: Open the dishwasher door carefully during or right after a cycle. Hot water or steam can escape and cause burns; wait until water noises stop and steam subsides before fully opening the door.
  • Sharp debris near the filter and drain pump: Wear gloves and use caution when removing the filter, pump cover, or other parts for cleaning; broken glass or other sharp debris can collect near the drain pump impeller.

Why your Frigidaire dishwasher is not draining

  1. Glass trap and filter packed with food soils: Frigidaire puts its glass trap and filter first when a Frigidaire dishwasher will not drain: food and debris collect there and block the drain path, and on models that report it the control raises i40, which Frigidaire defines as a clogged filter or sump caused by food soils building up. Difficulty 1/5.
  2. Drain hose kinked after being bumped or moved: Frigidaire treats a drain hose that has been bumped or moved as a cause in its own right: a kink in the drain line leaves water pooled in the bottom of the dishwasher after the cycle finishes, and its i20 guidance adds that the hose must not be pinched or restricted anywhere along its run. Difficulty 1/5.
  3. Cycle stopped part way through: A Frigidaire that halted part way through a cycle can hold water without having any drain fault at all. Frigidaire also warns that on some of its models flashing indicator lights are the normal way the control reports a drainage issue, so the flashing itself is a symptom rather than a second failure. Difficulty 1/5.
  4. Disposer knockout plug never removed: Where a Frigidaire drains into a food waste disposer, Frigidaire asks owners to verify the disposer's knockout plug came out; iFixit's Frigidaire guide places that plug right inside the nipple the dishwasher's drain hose attaches to, and says the dishwasher cannot drain properly while it is there. Difficulty 2/5.
  5. Disposer or its drain tube clogged: Even with the knockout plug gone, the disposer a Frigidaire drains into can be the blockage: iFixit's Frigidaire guide has you run the disposer first because it usually shares the dishwasher's drain, flush it with cold water for 20 seconds, and clear the drain tube if debris has packed into it. Difficulty 2/5.
  6. Drain hose below Frigidaire's 32 inch minimum height: Frigidaire gives a number for its own dishwashers rather than a general rule: the drain hose has to be kept at a minimum height of 32 inches from the floor and then fed down to the drain connection, not up. A hose below that height, or one that climbs into the drain, stops the tub emptying completely. Difficulty 2/5.
  7. New install without a proper high loop: The first question Frigidaire's drain troubleshooting asks is whether the unit is newly installed, and the check it names is that the drain hose was installed properly with a high loop and no kinks. On a Frigidaire the hose leaves the tub through a loop on the outside of the machine before it reaches an air gap, check valve, or high loop under the sink. Difficulty 2/5.
  8. Countertop drain air gap blocked: Frigidaire carries its air gap instruction inside the glass trap and filter guide: where a drain air gap was fitted for a built-in Frigidaire dishwasher, it has to be clean for the dishwasher to drain properly, and iFixit's Frigidaire page has you check the sink air gap fittings for obstructions. Difficulty 1/5.
  9. Drain pump jammed or failed: A sound Frigidaire drain pump clears the tub in a few minutes, so water still standing after that is itself evidence against the pump; a low hum or a squeal while it should be pumping points the same way, and these pumps fail both mechanically and electrically. Difficulty 2/5.
  10. Water has reached the base pan (i30 showing): Which code a Frigidaire shows says how far the problem has gone. i20 is Frigidaire's code for a unit that did not drain properly; i30 means the water has already reached the drain pan under the dishwasher and lifted the styrofoam float sitting in it, so the pan has to be dealt with as well as the drain path. Difficulty 3/5.
  11. Check valve or check ball stuck closed: Frigidaire dishwashers carry a check valve, or on some models a check ball, that normally sits beneath the filters at the bottom of the tub; stuck closed it holds the water in. On other units the same valve is mounted underneath the machine, just before the drain hose. Difficulty 4/5.
  12. Drain solenoid valve defective (single-direction motors): Some Frigidaire dishwashers use a drain solenoid valve to let the water out, and a failed solenoid leaves the tub full. Which kind you have is readable from the motor's wiring: two or three wires is a single-direction motor with a solenoid to check, while four wires is a reversing motor that has none. Difficulty 4/5.

Find the cause for your dishwasher

Step-by-step checks for a Frigidaire dishwasher not draining

Run Frigidaire's cancel-and-drain sequence

About 10 minutes

  1. Hold the Cancel button down for 5 to 10 seconds to clear the cycle that is stuck.
  2. Close the door and start a new cycle so the unit pumps the water out.
  3. If nothing happens, cut power at the breaker or unplug the dishwasher for 3 minutes and try once more.

Open the countertop air gap and check inside

About 10 minutes

  1. Find the small chrome cylinder on the countertop or sink deck behind the faucet.
  2. Twist the cover off and lift the inner cap to see the two hose fittings underneath.
  3. Clear any sludge or food packed in the passage and refit the cap and cover.

Measure the drain hose against Frigidaire's 32 inch rule

About 10 minutes

  1. Follow the hose from the dishwasher to where it meets the sink plumbing or disposer.
  2. Measure the highest point of the hose from the floor; Frigidaire wants at least 32 inches.
  3. Check that the hose then runs downward into the drain connection instead of climbing into it, and that nothing crushes it on the way.

Empty the glass trap, fine filter, and coarse filter

About 15 minutes

  1. Switch the dishwasher's breaker off, then bail out standing water and pull the lower rack.
  2. Rotate the Cylinder Fine Filter counterclockwise, lift it out and empty it, then rinse it under running water with a sponge or bottle brush.
  3. Lift out the Coarse Filter from the tub bottom, flush it under running water, and look at what came out before refitting both.

Name the noise the pump makes while it should be draining

About 10 minutes

  1. Start a cycle and stand by the dishwasher until the drain portion begins.
  2. Listen for a loud buzz, a squeal or drone, or a scraping sound and note which one you hear.
  3. Match it: buzz means blocked or dirty, squeal or drone means a failing wash pump, scraping means a damaged impeller.

Bucket test the drain hose to separate hose from pump

About 20 minutes

  1. Put a bucket and a drain pan under the sink connection, because the hose still holds water.
  2. Pull the hose end off the nipple below the sink or disposer and drop it into the bucket.
  3. Fill and drain the dishwasher: a strong flow that blows the clog out clears the hose, while a thin dribble means the hose or the pump is still restricted.

Look inside the disposer inlet for the knockout plug

About 15 minutes

  1. Loosen the clamp and slide the dishwasher's hose off the disposer inlet nipple, with a pan underneath.
  2. Shine a light into the nipple: a solid disc across it is the factory knockout plug still in place.
  3. If the plug is already gone, probe the nipple and the disposer's drain tube for packed debris.

Lift the impeller cover under the filter and check the propeller

About 25 minutes

  1. Switch the dishwasher's breaker off and close its water supply valve first.
  2. With the filters out, pry up the removable plastic cover over the impeller with a blunt knife and lift it clear.
  3. Turn the propeller by hand: it should move freely and be clean. Clear any glass or debris wedged against it, then replace the clip and filter.

How to fix a Frigidaire dishwasher not draining

Clear the stuck cycle with Cancel, then start a new one to drain

About 10 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Hold Cancel for 5 to 10 seconds to clear the existing cycle.
  2. Close the door and start a new cycle so the unit pumps out.
  3. If it still will not go, kill power at the breaker or unplug for 3 minutes and retry.

Clear the countertop drain air gap

About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Twist off the air gap cover and lift the inner cap.
  2. Clear the packed debris from the passage with a small brush.
  3. Refit the cap and cover and run a cycle.

Empty and rinse the glass trap, fine filter, and coarse filter

About 20 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Rotate the Cylinder Fine Filter counterclockwise and lift it out.
  2. Empty it, rinse it under running water, and use a sponge or bottle brush on stuck residue.
  3. Pull the Coarse Filter from the tub bottom, flush it, refit both, and run a cycle.

Unkink and realign the drain hose, then run a new cycle

About 15 minutes · Difficulty 1/5

  1. Free the hose from whatever is pressing on it and straighten the kink.
  2. Re-secure it so the dishwasher cannot sit on it or pinch it again.
  3. Start a new cycle and let the unit drain and reset.

Give a new installation the high loop Frigidaire asks for

About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Strap the hose up under the countertop so it forms a loop above the drain connection.
  2. Check no kinks were introduced while securing it.
  3. Run a cycle and confirm the tub empties.

Run and flush the disposer, then clear its drain tube

About 20 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Run the disposer to grind out what is sitting in it.
  2. Flush it with cold water for 20 seconds to move debris down the drain.
  3. If it is still slow, take the dishwasher hose off and clear the inlet nipple and drain tube.

Clear whatever is jamming the impeller under the filter

About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. With the breaker off and the water valve closed, take the filters out.
  2. Pry up the plastic impeller cover with a blunt knife and lift it away.
  3. Remove the glass or debris around the propeller, check it spins freely, and refit the clip and filter.

Knock out the disposer plug so the dishwasher can drain into it

About 25 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Unplug the disposer, then set a screwdriver against the plug inside the inlet nipple and tap it through.
  2. Fish the loosened disc out of the disposer chamber so it cannot jam the grinder.
  3. Refit the dishwasher hose, clamp it, and run a cycle.

Raise the drain hose to Frigidaire's 32 inch minimum and feed it downward

About 30 minutes · Difficulty 2/5

  1. Lift and strap the hose so its high point clears 32 inches from the floor.
  2. Route the run from there down into the drain or disposer connection, not upward.
  3. Run a cycle and confirm the tub is empty at the end.

Dry the base pan so i30 clears, then finish the drain repair

About 45 minutes · Difficulty 3/5

  1. With the power and water off, move the side insulation near the base aside.
  2. Take the water out of the drain pan with a shop vac or paper towels.
  3. Clip the insulation back, restore power, and deal with the drain fault that filled the pan.
