Dishwasher Door Won't Latch: Causes & Fixes
Or the latch/door switch prevents starting.
An obstruction, such as racks not fully pushed in, tall items sticking out, or silverware/food particles caught at the door seal, is a documented cause of a dishwasher door that will not close or latch; Whirlpool, GE, and Samsung all list it.
Before you work on your dishwasher
- Power: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its circuit breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Water: Turn off the water supply valve before disconnecting hoses or the inlet valve.
- Heat: Water and the heating element can be hot right after a cycle; let the dishwasher cool first.
- Sharp debris: Wear gloves when reaching into the filter or sump; broken glass often collects there.
- Stop: If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or find water near wiring, switch off the breaker and call a technician.
- Disconnect power before accessing internal dishwasher parts: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off the circuit breaker that powers it before removing panels, the filter, or the drain pump cover, or before reaching into the sump.
- Heavy appliance: two-person lift: A dishwasher is heavy and can tip. Do not pull it out of the cabinet, tilt it, or lift it by yourself; get a second person to help.
Why your dishwasher door won't latch
- Rack, dish, or debris obstruction blocking the door: An obstruction, such as racks not fully pushed in, tall items sticking out, or silverware/food particles caught at the door seal, is a documented cause of a dishwasher door that will not close or latch; Whirlpool, GE, and Samsung all list it. Difficulty 1/5.
- Dishwasher not level or not square in the cabinet: Whirlpool documents that the dishwasher must be level, supported by its leveling legs and rear wheels, and square in the cabinet; if the tub opening is not square, the door will not seal or latch properly. Samsung also notes an unlevel unit can cause the door to stick against the cabinet. Difficulty 1/5.
- AutoRelease rods still extended after a cycle (Samsung): Samsung documents that its AutoRelease feature extends rods to crack the door open automatically at the end of a cycle, and the door cannot be closed again until the rods retract, which can be mistaken for a stuck or broken latch. Difficulty 1/5.
- Door latch mechanism damaged, worn, or misaligned with the strike plate: A physically damaged, worn, or misaligned door latch mechanism (including the spring and locker-arm assembly, or its alignment with the strike plate) is a documented cause of a door that will not latch; Whirlpool and Samsung both point to a broken latch as a distinct fault from obstructions or leveling. Difficulty 1/5.
- Adjustable rack raised/lowered unevenly: GE documents that an adjustable rack raised or lowered unevenly on one side only can prevent the door from closing all the way. Difficulty 1/5.
- New door gasket not yet seated (new installation): On a new installation, GE documents that a new door gasket has not yet seated/molded, which can hold the door slightly open until several complete wash cycles have run; in the meantime it may help to push in on the top center of the control panel while latching. Difficulty 1/5.
- Latch closes but the door switch does not signal the control board: GE documents that the door latch switch must be fully engaged for the switch to electrically signal the control board that the door is closed; a latch that closes mechanically but does not fully seat the switch will prevent the dishwasher from starting even though the door appears shut. Difficulty 1/5.
- Open-door-drying system holding the door open: On models with an open-door-drying feature, Whirlpool documents that the door can remain open after a cycle finishes because the drying system has not reset, rather than because of a mechanical latch fault. Difficulty 1/5.
